When did you start babysitting?

I started about 5 years ago, when I was 13 or 14 years old. Back then I wasn’t babysitting as much and if I was, it was always for friends and family.

How often do you babysit at the moment?

At the moment I’m babysitting up to 2 times a week.

How old are the kids you’re babysitting right now and what specific thing do you like about that age?

Since I am babysitting for 2 families, they have different ages.

The first family I am babysitting for has twins. They are 1 ½ years old. What I like about them is that I have been babysitting them since they were 7 months old. 2 months ago they took their first steps so now I get to be really active with them. Also, they’re learning their first words in 2 languages right now: German and Slovakian. I am super impressed, everytime they understand me when I’m speaking German but can also understand the parents when they say something in Slovakian. It is unbelievable how much children that age are able to learn and understand.

Since June, I have 2 new cousins, twin girls, and I have been visiting them once a week as well. They just turned 6 months old. It is unbelievable how differently they both develop. One of the girls is currently learning how to crawl and the other girl is just learning how to turn on their belly. One of them is already growing her second tooth while the other doesn’t have any. One specific thing I like about this age is that they’re already looking for fun activities throughout the day. In the past, they were happy when you would carry them around. Now they already need (one sided) conversations to be happy. What I love most is when I’m being goofy with them and they start laughing and smiling. That’s one thing that really fills my heart with love.

What do you like about babysitting?

The variety of it. I am pretty sure that no other part-time job is as rich in variety as babysitting. Every child is different. They all develop differently, they enjoy different things and so much more. Everytime I go back to babysitting, they seem to have learned something new already or they are interested in trying something new with me. It is the best feeling to know that they feel comfortable around me. When they ask when I’ll be back, when they are already waiting at the window for me to come to their door to play with them in the backyard. I could go on and on for this question. There are so many things I cherish as a babysitter!

What are your best experiences as a babysitter?

I had so many great experiences as a babysitter so it’s hard for me to choose one. But I remember babysitting for a family with 2 kids, ages 2 and 5. I used to go to the river with them and we made paper boats together, which we let flow in the river. They were so excited about this that the next time I went there, they already had their boats ready to take to the river. So we quickly went to the river and the older child cried some tears of joy because her boat went further than the last time. That was one moment where I realized, I managed to make a child really happy again!

Which activities do you usually do with children?

I love going outdoors with children. Doesn’t matter if it’s to the river, to the playground or even the backyard. I am also a very creative person and I love doing crafts and artsy things with children. Music and dancing can also not be missing of course!

Do you have any tips for other babysitters which could help them?

You need a lot of patience when the children are having a bad day. The most important thing is to never lose your patience and to keep calm. Children often need some type of “mirror” to focus on. Children learn daily and they often don’t know how to handle their emotions or how to act in certain situations. That’s why it is super important to be patient in these scenarios. And also I would recommend the Babysits app. Without this app I would’ve never made it this far as a babysitter!
